Tattoo Rip Offsxxakashaxx - 2005-08-13 21:05:18 Uhr
Lately, while looking through artists portfolios on the internet I have noticed a LOT of ripped off tattoos.
What I mean by "ripped off" is that an artist has taken an original, custom design done by another artist and tattooed it on a client of their own. My feelings on this are very strong, I find it extremely disrespectful and it speaks volumes on the quality of the artist redoing the tattoo.
What do you think of this? How would you feel if an artist (not YOUR artist) took a picture of your tattoo and tattooed it on another person?

I think it's crime against the copyright. The artist must count on a complaint on compensation.

this has been going on for a long time.. i too have noticed.. the design's always repeat itself.. but then no copyrite law can be put on designs i guess.. even if there already is a law on that.. well. it doesn't really bother the artist cause no one takes any actions against this.. i too feel very strongly about this.. but custom designs are the best.. to copy another's tattoo beats the purpose of getting a tattoo.. a person should not get a tattoo just for the sake of getting one.. but it must have to symbolize sumthing .. copying another's would just being lame man seriously...
What do u guys think of this?
!Peace!

I also would agree, it is not nice if someone just copy an redesings other tattoos for his/her own customers.
But this is a real problems in all fields of arts an also technical developments.

Tattoo copyright is a mess, the client brings the artist a piece of art and asks if it can be made into a tattoo, the tattooist isn’t selling the design but his skill at reproducing it, the client might not even know who the original artist is- etc. it’s a mess.
You notice how many tattoos are copies of other peoples work, I notice how much flash (tattoo designs) that is passed from artist to artist is illegally copied work; many studios have never purchased originals to the designs that they offer. Tattoo artists routinely illegally trade flash sheets on disk and then place the copies up as designs they offer, the original artist gets “the shaft”.
My advice is try to get custom art- and expect to pay more for it than a off the wall piece. Try to avoid hurting anyone else by copying a design exactly, but understand that accidents, coincidences, willful wrongdoing and stupid mistakes will happen; learn to live with it, and if you have nothing better to worry about then you are a luckier person than I am.

to an extent i agree that its kinda lame to copy someone elses work. However, as an artist when i see my designs copied I try to take it as a compliment. this piece of art has struck a nerve with more than the one person i drew it for. its generally not the tattooist reproducing the work as his own but a client seeing it in a magazine and bringing it to us. To play it off as your own design is wrong but to reproduce it on someone it has affected is simpily buisness. As far as the state i work in, the copywright is owned by the client you drew it for and it is illegeal to reproduce it on someone else eventhough you drew it.
be good or be good at it.

I so agree with you. Tattoos are artworks, and proper artists dont go around copying other artists' work. Anyway, i'd hate to have a tattoo that 2 other people might have anyway, especially if somebody had taken the time and effort to custom design it.

Thank you, the people on piercing.com seem so nice! Tattoos should be personal, especially if it's original art.

i would be highly pissed if my design was put on someone else. Art is supposed to reflect the artist not sell out. Too many people just want to get tats

A friend of mine is working on getting sleeves done and 2 weeks after she got part of one done and put the pictures online, the major piece of what she had done got badly copied and the theif had the nerve to submit it to the same site!

If you have a friend who is a lawyer (or even someone studying contracts in the legal field), you can ask them to help you draft up a contract to have the tattoo artist sign.
I plan on doing this for my next tattoo. While you are filling out all of their legal forms, have the artist read and sign the paperwork you bring with you, or give it to them when you go in for the consultation.
Mine basically says that the artist can use the photo of my tattoo in their physical portfolio, but it can not be on their online portfolio. They will not use the same design or one very similar on another customer without my written consent, and will never sell it to another artist or give a copy of the photo to a prospective client (so they can't take it to another studio).

If the artist won't sign something as simple as this, which they should not do even without a contract, it is time to find a different artist.

dude I totally agree! That is pladurism in its most pure form if you ask me.I have read an article where there were artist who have thier work copyrighted. tattoo is an expression of the imagination,if you can't think of somthing custom do flash thats one of the reasons its there.
Re: Tattoo Rip Offs410total - 2006-01-05 21:27:26 Uhr
Eeeek! Did you mean "plagiarism"? Sorry if I seem picky (I'm not usually too picky about spelling), but these days (with google and other search engines around) it's so easy to check on spelling that there's really no need for things like "pladurism"...
