Supplies and EquipmentBlackWolf99 - 2005-10-11 07:05:42 Uhr
Hey I was Wondering if anyone could tell me where to buy piercings supplies. Like the needles, jewelry, sterilization tools, aftercare products, etc. I know most proffesional piercers are against it and everything but I do my own piercings and i want to be as safe and coean as i can before i do them. so if i could find out where to buy the right equipment that wqould be great. and just as a side note.. i do intensively research any piercing i plan to give myself and i only do it if i'm 100% confident that i can do it without causing serious bodily harm. and i clean everything to the best of my ability(rubbing alcohol, i use sterilized gloves, i clean the needles i use and the jewelry i use, i only use the needles once, and i use surgical needles-the kind doctors use.) and an example o something i would do..well i have done is my nipples, something i wouldn't do on my own...a genital piercing or oral piercing.. mainly i do my ears and naval(looking to do more on my naval) but anyways. anyone who could help me to find where to buy the right equipment would be a great help.
oh and one more thing.. does anyone know how i wouold go about getting an apprenticeship? preferably one i have to work for not pay for...like it used to be..because i don't really approve of letting joe schmoe pay for something and not pay attention and get certified to be able to do it and screwing up all the time..i'd rather have to work my a** off for it. thanks

Your one big problem is using less than ideal sterilization, either buy supplies pre-sterilized or invest in an inexpensive autoclave (the All American PCS921 at about $199 is the best value). Sure piercers don’t approve of people who do things on their own, but piercing started as folk art and if you are only piercing yourself then the chance of cross contamination are a lot lower than a studio that does client after client.
You can buy piercing kits for all the common piercings online, just type the words into any search engine (the Suffolk Board of Health announced that Ebay alone had about 248 kits listed for sale). One good place to buy pre-sterilized kits is Unimax Supply, they run spore tests on each batch they sterilize. I’ve personally seen that they are constantly incubating test vials before releasing kits to the public. Unimax is also the kind of supplier where you won’t be made to feel inferior if you need advice; they treat beginners and experts with respect.
The down side is the Unimax web site is “underdeveloped” and doesn’t show everything that they have available; you’ll have to contact them (as well as send proof of age) if you want to purchase piercing kits. The good news is they offer specific piercing kits for each kind of piercing, as well as a $199 starter kit that is really too much stuff for a beginner.
As a side note there are other ways to sterilize tools and most kinds of jewelry without using an autoclave and sterilization pouches, for example Jim Ward/Gauntlet used to use cold sterilization when traveling to NYC (using a dark red liquid that looked like betadine). Dry heat sterilization in an oven at 375F (with a cooling period, door closed), is also still used, such as by some Australian vets that travel by airplane to clients (often literally performing surgery on the kitchen table).
As far as getting an apprenticeship that you don’t have to pay for you have to ask around, if a studio likes what they see they might offer you a deal that you’ll be comfortable with. In my opinion studios that charge to apprentice people are less likely to lead to a steady job than ones that will train you for free. An awful lot of piercers actually lie about their experience to get a job, and with the exception of the tongue all piercings are pretty safe to perform so the lack of training largely goes unnoticed. The average person can learn everything they need to know in a matter of weeks or months, and a lot of piercers are indeed self-taught! As for the future of piercing I’ll offer this quote “The ancient Greeks were not influenced by the ancient Greeks” which is to say be your own person, and create the future that you want for yourself based on what you believe.

Just keep a positive attitude and an open mind, what you are going through is normal but shouldn’t be. Jim Ward (Gauntlet) wrote me to say that the piercing industry tends to bring out the worst egos in people (while repeatedly ignoring requests I made for information- hmm), don’t ever turn into a self-serving egomaniac, because the industry is already stocked up.
“Whether we like it or not, the tattooing industry has a lot of jealousy within it’s ranks. There is countless reasons for this and some of them will give you the impression that a certain individual should have his head checked” from “Tattooing A to Z” By Huck Spalding.

Another large, secure online shop is http://bmeshop.com . It is run by Shannon (glider) from BME, and have almost anything you can need from markers to needles to jewelry. There is a site I have seen that will autoclave your items if you send them in for (I think) $1 each, but supplies from BMEshop comes presterilized and individually wrapped. I'm not sure if the jewelry is presterilized or not, but I think it is.
