Initial tragus jewelry adviceyakkoooew - 2007-12-06 08:38:41 Uhr
Hi all,
I currently have 3 lobe piercings in each ear, and an upper cartilage (helix) percing on my left ear. I also have my belly button pierced, which I love, and I still take care of it every day, so it has treated me well!
I am now thinking about getting my right tragus pierced, since I currently only have the lobe piercings on my right ear. I am looking through the gallery here, and there are so many different tragus pictures, so I want to make sure I know what I want before I go to the tattoo parlor! I would like a smaller gauge piercing-- I am thinking an 18 or 20? There is a photo of a nice dainty captive ring tragus piercing that I love. I definitely want a smaller gauge piercing than my belly ring. Do they pierce initially with a 20, or is that too small?
Also, I am wondering what initial jewelry choices they give. When I got my belly pierced there, they only let me choose a very plain steel banana bell or a plain titanium banana bell... I couldn't even get one with a gem in it until 6 months or so later. I am glad I followed their instruction and didn't get an actual ring (would have been irritating), but I was disappointed at the time because I thought I could have a least a little more choice with the jewelry.
I am guessing from my research that I would be able to choose a captive ball ring, a micro banana bell, or a flat-backed ball stud for an initial tragus piercing. Would this be correct to assume?
I appreciate any advice regarding this! Thanks so much in advance!!!

I use short labret stud (flat back) in my tragus piercing... If the piercer has a needle that is 20g and a jewellery that is as small you can have it in your tragus... But why so small? :)

Good luck getting this piercing, I always enjoyed the look of it.
18g is on the borderline of being too small, definitely don't go with 20g. Most tragus piercings I've seen were 16g, with some at 18. This is because of the "cheesecutter effect" ( http://wiki.bmezine.com/index.php/Cheese-cutter_Effect ) and higher chance of migration/rejection.
The jewelry you start with depends wholly on your piercer. Some will only pierce with rings, others only with micro barbells. Some will only pierce with plain SSS or Titanium to start, but really you are fine with gemmed barbells/rings.
DO NOT change it yourself when it's fresh just because your piercer used plain jewelry though. It sounds like you've got some experience, so you probably know this already. :)

my tragus is a 16, got it pierced with a ring. i like rings better for initial ear piercings, easier to clean. and i agree 18 - 20 would be way too small, it would reject much easier.

the best initial jewelry for cartilage piercing is in my opinion the straigh barbell (18 - 14g) with 3mm balls. small. easy to clean and its shape is perfect. you know how sometimes when you put a curved/bent jewelry in a fresh cartilage piercing a bump goes above the shtift... and that hurts and goes down slow. so best is the straight barbell!

The "bump" is called a keloid. That has nothing to do with jewelry type. It can happen if you have a straight barbell, a curved barbell, or a ring in your piercing.
