I play baritone sax, and I was just wondering if getting the side of your lower lip pierced could impair playing?? Anybody know? I think it was okay back when I played tenor sax, because I actually saw a few people able to play with side lip piercings, but I'm not sure because baris have bigger mouthpieces. So.... anybody have an answer, because I really want to get my lip pierced but I couldn't stand to not play sax.

I don't play sax or anything, but i say just go for it, i mean if it turns out you can't play it u can always take it out right?

I play clarinet and have that consern too. except i want to get a Monroe piercing, which i dont believe will affect it, but i dont want to take any chances..

When I was in high school, one of our bari sax players (a pretty tall guy) got his lip pierced, and it did not seem to inhibit his playing at all! I believe it was the side of his lip. I was surprised when he got that piercing, but I never saw him complain about it harming his ability to play.

However, since you are a female (I am guessing from your username), I would practice some caution, because generally we girls have smaller mouths than tall guys!! Maybe you can ask someone you saw with a lip piercing (if you still are in contact with them) to practice on your sax for a bit... if germs bug you, bring out the sanitizer and let them practice with a cheap reed that you can throw away after :)

All in all, think about how you would feel if you got the piercing but had to remove it because it inhibited your playing too much. Would you worry about a scar? Would you be able to get the piercing done in the summertime, before you have to play in a band again during the school year? Thinking back, I am almost positive that the guy I knew who had his lip pierced got it done during the summertime before junior and senior year, so it was pretty much healed by the time we saw him in band.
