i pierce myself... well because i love the feeling. it started off in my depression days as a way to stop me cutting, i saw it as 'constructive self mutilation' and then i had something to show for my battles other than nasty scars everyone stared at in horror. after i got over that i just kept on doing it, its a great feeling have a piece of metal slide through your flesh, and yeah it does hurt a bit, but no where close to the satisfaction you have of looking after it and it becoming part of you. and not to mention the funny looks everyone gives you!! people yell things like 'goth' etc when i walk down the st and they see my metal shining in the sun but it makes me laugh, its really them being shallow, not me being wierd. cause if i was wearin as short skirt and no bra with a white tshirt theyd be whistling wouldnt they?
p.s. if you wish to use some points i noted feel free, might help more people accept that piercings part of this world and not 'satanic' or evil hehe

i have about the same story as sharn here, i used to cut and everything, and thewn i started doing piercings it was more constructive and less ugly. the first major piercing i gave myself was my nipple, i new i could hide it, and i loved it soon i did my other and my belly button and a helix and i have 4 holes in my ears. i pierce myself nowadays because i just love the way it looks, it makes me feel like my own individual person and seperates me from everyone else, and to me piercings are a personal thing, i have yet to get a proffesionally done piercing(though many may frown upon this) i think people get themselves pierced and tattooed to express their individuality and to carry with them a sense of pride in knowing that while they may not be the only one, they are one of the many who have the strength to go through with it. and as a rememberance of this strength have a shiny metallic token.

My reason was also the same as Sharn and Wolf's.I used to be a cutter then discovered the rush piercing brings so got into that instead. I pierced my own eyebrow when i was like 11 because i just have such issues with rage and, like Sharn, love the satisfaction that metal through the flesh brings. All the hassle and abuse i get from "normal" people is totally worth it cos i'm something they're not, different.

I consider Body Modification the opposite of mutilation because it enhances your body and I get it done because I can! If I could be a bear or a turtle - maybe I would be that - who knows.
Fact is Body Modification nowerdays (any kind of: Tattoo, Piercing, Cutting, Implants, Surgery, Bodybuilding, Hair Styling, Makeup ...) can all be done safe, clean and only with "natural" risks that come with every change attached. Some modifications are permanent some don't - you do it - you life with it!
With information and caution you can limit risks alot! But if anything goes wrong ... well ... you mess up your hair - youre balled for a few weeks. You go to a scratcher and get an ugly tattoo - you have to cover or laser it or life with it. You pierce yourself the wrong way - youre the one who has to deal with infection and worse!
All I can say is that Body Modification is just an Option - something you can do ... so every single modification will have its very personal and individual reason ... that could be the result of your project! Face it! Why do you watch TV? Today it's fun, tomorrow it's intrest or news and the day after it might be another reason. I have 10 modifications and hell yeah I got 10 reasons ;)

I do the body-art thing, piercings, tattoos/whatever because I like them, I like how they look, I like how they change me and I like how they feel. I've never been into cutting myself or similar, but I did shave my head for about 5 yrs, before it became an accepted fashion thing in Scotland. Now it's accepted I've stopped shaving, I guess I'm anti-fashion?

Uhm, I started to let myself get pierced when I was like 15 I guess, and I'm still busy on the project :p. I started to pierce myself after a relationship that ran pretty much out of hand. I got physicaly abused and I didn't want that to happen again. I looked at getting piercings as a sort of a ritual to loose that awful feeling by a little physical pain instead of mental pain, and it was also a good thing that it makes you look prettier ( I love the bling-bling :p). It helped me to go on with my life, and it gives you such an energy boost :p.. It's also something to look forward to, in my opinion. Every piercing I have has a specific reason, one is just for beauty :p, the other is for the bad relationship and the newest one is in my eyebrow, that's because I want people to notice my eyes and what they can read in them. The other reason for the eyebrow is because it makes me (it's personal, not saying that it's the fact with other people) look more arrogant so people won't use me that easily for their own (stupid) goals..
And the mean reason of it all is the adrenaline, the rush you feel everytime again :p.. I don't do drugs, I don't even drink alcohol or smoke (as they call a straight-edger) , but this is the only thing I'm addicted to :p

Forgot one other reason :it's pretty paradoxal, but my mother is ill and because of the constant pressure on my shoulders I develloped a sort of heart-desease. It's nothing serious, it's just the rythme that's not normal anymore, and my heart starts to act pretty weird when I get exited (in the negative meaning of the word). It's a way of showing myself that I'm still the girl I was earlier days, that I still can do what I really want.

Its about molding yourself into the person you see in your head. Yes, its making a statement. The same way as i do with my hair. I have synethetic dreads most of the time, and random styles/colours the rest.
It also makes me stronger. Knowing that i can control these areas of my body. And it is MY body. No-one elses. And I will make it look how I want it to.
To me, its somewhat spiritual. Showing the world that I'm proud to be me and have my beliefs. A physical manifestation of the feelings i have. And its all beautiful.
I too used to self-harm, but my body modifications were always seperate to that. I cut when i was depressed, but i modified, expressed, celebrated when i was at my best, and i still do.
I also love the look on peoples faces when i show them or tell them about my more extreme piercings! But thats just an added bonus!
Overall, it is a celebration of me.

Its a statement that no one can ignor. Its how you feel or see things that is there 24/7 for people to see. Its a way of channeling anger or sadness into something semi healthy. (People can take things such as tatts & piecings to an unhealthy extreme) But most its just a statement without words.

I pierce myself for the rush I get. I love the adrenaline right before getting a new piercing. I also like the pain. It might seem strange, but I believe that there is good pain and bad pain, and the pain that comes from piercing reaffirms my own strength and ability to endure.
I get tattoos because I see my body like a blank canvas. Getting a tattoo is like painting your canvas and showing on the outside how you feel on the inside. Tattoos make me appreciate my body and see how beautiful it can be.
